CONffIDENCE WP1b : Perfluorinated Compounds
Objectives
The main objectives of this work package is the development of simplified analytical methods based on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for the analysis of PFCs in food and feed.
The validation, harmonization and verification of these analytical methods will be carried out using a step by step approach including the organization of interlaboratory studies at European level.
Once validated the analytical protocols will be used to the analysis in real food samples in order to create a European data base.
In addition, toxicity of PFCs will be evaluated using standard methods.
Finally, the main inputs of PFCs through the diet will be assessed.
Overview
Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 includes the responsibility to identify emerging risks. Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are used in a wide variety of industrial applications and, due to their persistent character, PFCs have been shown to be distributed globally. Some of the PFCs have been related to different carcinogenic action, e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been identified as a potent hepatocarcinogen in rodents. Hence their contamination pathways, concentration levels, and toxicological potency should be urgently assessed in food. For the PFCs fish feed, fish and dairy products were selected since these are suspected to be main inputs to adults and children, respectively.
Work Package leader
Dr Marinella Farré (National Council of Scientific Research, CSIC, SP)
Dr. Marinella Farré is a Research scientist, permanent staff at the Department of Environmental Chemistry, IDAEA-CSIC, Barcelona. She has more than 40 scientific papers in journals of SCI, 8 book chapters. She has expertise in new screening techniques (immunoassays, bioassays and biosensors), as well as in liquid chromatography coupled to advanced mass spectrometry techniques (LC-QqQ-MS/MS, LC-QTOF-MS, LC-QLIT-MS..) for the analysis of environmental and food matrices. She has involved in 9 EU projects, 3 of them active.
