PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT: IS THERE A PROBLEM?
The presence, fate and behavior of human pharmaceuticals in the environment is well documented. This topic is the subject of much attention from scientists as well as policy makers and the general public. However, little is known regarding whether or not their presence constitutes a risk to either wildlife or humans. Answers to this question would help to influence areas of risk assessment, water management and pharmaceutical production as well as regulatory affairs and public perception. Based on scientific sessions and round table discussions, this International Conference aims to open the debate to a wide audience, allowing discussion of questions such as “is there a problem”, and “what are the consequences of PIEs not only in terms of human and wildlife health, but also from a regulatory and financial perspective” ?

QUALITY CONTROL OF BOTANICALS, TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINES, HERBAL FOOD SUPPLEMENTS AND HERBAL MEDICINAL PRODUCTS
The importance of plant based products is increasing rapidly within the European Community. Food products, Novel Foods, Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM), Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPs) and Food Supplements, containing herbal materials have to be controlled by modern analytical techniques regarding their identity, potential adulteration with toxic plant species and contaminants, e.g . pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, fumigants, etc., as well as microbial contamination. Especially for chemical contaminants there are binding legal limits (MRLs) established within the EC, which have to be controlled by experienced and accredited laboratories. For a quality control laboratory it is essential to use state-of-the-art equipment and validate methods for all required tests. AOAC Europe Section and the main sponsor PhytoLab are proud to present the most advanced findings in QC of botanical products and have invited key speakers in the field.

BIOTOXIN AND CHEMICAL RESIDUES IN FOOD NETWORKS ANNUAL CONFERENCE: CLIMATE CHANGE & AQUACULTURE
The Biotoxin and Chemical Residues in food safefood networks will hold a joint one day conference themed around ‘climate change and aquaculture at the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast. Although public interest and demand continues to swing towards organic, local and sustainable produce, the rapid expansion of the world’s population and the subsequent depletion of resources will have an impact upon aquaculture, as progressively more intensive practices are used. Aside from this, climate change will result in the appearance of new pests and diseases along with changes in meteorological conditions which could subsequently impact aquaculture practices. This conference will bring together researchers, industry and regulators from the aquaculture sector across the Island of Ireland to discuss key topics of interest and concern relating to the impact of climate change upon aquaculture and it’s produce. For example the illegal use of antibiotics and other compounds designed to increase production or value, exposure to organic pollutants, as well as the ever increasing problems associated with marine and fresh water toxins. The purpose of the conference will be to provide networking opportunities for all stakeholders in this important industry on the Island of Ireland. A technical workshop for the detection of biotoxins and chemical residues in food will be held at Queens University, Belfast on 1st June 2011. This workshop will cover a range of techniques including immunological methods, spectroscopic techniques and ‘omics’. The workshop will include theoretical and practical sessions, along with examples of relevant applications for the aquaculture industry.

11TH ANNUAL FERA/JIFSAN SYMPOSIUM: DETECTION TECHNOLOGIES FOR INTENTIONALLY ADDED ADULTERANTS/CONTAMINANTS
This year's symposium will focus on Detection Technologies for Intentionally Added Adulterants/Contaminants. Adulteration of food products was highlighted recently by the incident in China where melamine was intentionally added to milk in order to give a false indication of high protein content and thereby increase the value of the product. Similar adulteration has occurred in the past, for example when in the 1980s diethylene glycol, a substance related to chemicals used in antifreeze, was added to wines in order to give a false indication of quality measured as residual sugars. Human health consequences and food quality measures relating to such economic adulteration are a growing concern for food producers, manufacturers and regulatory agencies. There are also consequences for damage to brand integrity and economic fraud is a serious crime. This meeting will explore the whole topic with a focus on the development of analytical testing methods that can be applied to confirm product authenticity and safety. Sessions will include case studies, development tools and "lessons learned".

TRAINING - APPLICATION OF AMBIENT MASS SPECTROMETRY FOR THE ANALYSIS OF CONTAMINANTS/RESIDUES IN FOOD
This training course co-organised by CONffIDENCE and BIOCOP projects, will provide participants with knowledge in the application of ambient mass spectrometry for the rapid analysis of food contaminants (e.g. pesticide residues, mycotoxins). The benefits and limitations of a number of different ambient mass spectrometry techniques will be discussed, including Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) and the Atmospheric Solids Analysis Probe (ASAP). The training will focus on the theory and practical application of (a) DART coupled to a high resolution mass spectrometer (time of flight, TOFMS or orbitrap MS), and (b) Atmospheric Solids Analysis Probe (ASAP) coupled to a quadrupole/TOFMS. DART and ASAP are representatives of new types of ion source working under ambient conditions. As ambient mass spectrometry techniques often require no or minimal sample preparation the overall analysis times can be reduced to a few minutes. Furthermore, use of the highresolution MS for accurate mass measurement provides information of elemental composition and hence the identification of target analytes and possible identification of unknown contaminants.

FOOD PROTEIN WORKSHOP
Proteins are a nutritious and economically valuable component of food ingredients – which can provide incentive for adulteration. This happened most recently when many children were sickened or died from milk products adulterated with melamine to increase their apparent protein content. Currently used tests did not detect this, and new methods are called for to help prevent another such tragedy. Hear the latest thinking on how to detect falsified protein levels. Join leading domestic and international scientists from the food industry, academia, governments, and trade associations to explore which tools work best to measure food protein. Discuss emerging ways to protect consumers from intentionally contaminated food ingredients, to safeguard your food supply chain, and to protect your brand.

FAO/IAEA SYMPOSIUM ON SUSTAINABLE IMPROVEMENT OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION AND HEALTH
The on-going ‘Livestock Revolution’, a demand-driven increase in livestock production, especially in developing countries, presents both opportunities and risks. The shift in the human diet from plant-based protein sources to animal-based protein sources, consumer demand for safe and quality animal products, and expanding markets for livestock products have raised several challenges such as; cost-effective production of safe and quality animal products, control of emerging and zoonotic diseases, and efficient management of impact of livestock on the environment. However, these changes have also provided many opportunities to benefit the local economy and producers, and reduce poverty. New challenges and opportunities demand innovative ideas and approaches, and mechanisms to take this knowledge to potential users. Many of the approaches will be multidisciplinary in nature and require collaboration with specialists in areas other than animal scientists. Livestock production in developing countries is constrained by low genetic potential of animals, poor nutrition, poor husbandry and infectious diseases. Nuclear techniques, when applied in conjunction with conventional methods, can identify critical points in these areas that can be targeted for cost-effective improvements and interventions. Thus the challenge is to use such technologies to enhance food security and alleviate poverty by supporting sustainable livestock production systems in developing countries through strategic and applied research, technology transfer and capacity building. The main topics to be addressed at the symposium will be: - Interactions among nutrition, reproduction and genotype - Livestock-environment interaction / productivity/ climate ( water/ land/ plants/ heat/ altitude) - Detection and control of transboundary animal diseases, including zoonoses - Animal product safety and food quality.
